Hi,
i am looking at flying ants at the moment, i currently sail a Int. Optimist at Sandringham yacht club in Victoria.
Does anyone sail flying ants in Victoria? if so, where?
I have been looking at transition boats, between the Oppie and a class like the 420 or the 29er.
The two boats i have found are the flying ant, and the flying eleven. What advantages does the ant have over the 11?
I am looking at AUS550 'No Guts No Glory'.
are there certain things to look for in a flying ant? are there common problems that i should look at before buying.

Is the single trapeze mainly for heavy airs? or do you need to use it in medium airs.

I realize that the odds of anyone replying are minimal, this forum dosn't look very active, but i might as well try.

Thanks,
James

G'day James,

I can't help you much with your quetions in relation to the Flying 11 or Flying Ant but thought I'd least send you a message so you know you're not being ignored.

I have bought an ant for my boys, to learn to sail on because I think it would be a good boat to lead into other trapeze and spinaker boats. I have a lot of work to do to get her seaworthy. See other post on this site. Ant 553.

I live in Bendigo, Victoria but do not know of any flying ant competition/titles/association running in Victoria.

Hope you have more luck than I did getting some answers to your questions.

Gday James,
I too live in Vic and sail out of MtMartha.
Ive just refurbished an old neglected Ant for my 11yo son
and bought another that needs plenty of work for 14yo daughter.
Like you I was looking for a fun challenging boat (in the middle)
for my kids. I remember sailing an ant as a kid for a while and it was a great
stepping stone for other skiffs. It also appears to be a boat they could stick with for a number of years. Like Col's posting on the web site I would love to se some helpful deck layout photos and advice etc.
There does appear to be some boats at Warrnambool YC and I found the old one at Carrum YC.
Like you and Col I'm feeling my way so hope this helps.
Maybe a few random Victorians might start a class rebirth!!!!!!
cheers
Ric

G'day Ric,

I may be down McCrae way at the beginning of Nov (Not sure yet). There is a regatta on then so if I can make it I'll have my boat there and I hope to have the boys boat with me too and at least sailable by then. Provided it all comes to together, if you'd like we could get together and compare notes on our Flying Ant Projects.

If you're interested, I'll post info closer to the time on how to find me.

G'day All,

I'm also looking at an Ant for my son Kyle and he will be sailing out of McCrae where we are members. Kyle currently has a Sabot and crews for me on our Tasar but wants to skipper his own boat with a crew. Maybe we can resurrect a Victorian fleet. Have to stay in touch.

G'day Jonathon,

It'd be good to get the Flying Ant class started again in Victoria (especially since we seem to be the one's using the forum the most). However according to the Flying Ant Rules, my oldest son won't be able to sail in the Class until next season ('08 - '09) when he's 9. His brother has 3 years to wait until he's 9. Still neither of them has sailed a boat by themselves yet anyway and both have a lot to learn. Old sails and lots of swims.

Maybe we could be future members.

Col.

I think there are enough Flying Ant in Victoria to have at least a get together. Let the kids meet talk and maybe some type of informal regatta/training. Hopefully somewhere on inland waters so the younger kids can still have a go. Similar to the rinse regatta that was held at jindebyne. It could be held at the Albury/Wodonga Yacht Club if NSW boats were interested.

Daryl

Yarrawonga has an Australia Day regatta on. Don't know what their water levels are like though.

I was planing on taking the Ant to Yarrawonga for the Australia day Regatta if I'm still not in Sydney. They are currently sailing OTB boats the water level can change fairly quickly but can fill up without rain it all depends on the Muuray/Darling Basin Commission and how they regulate the water.

cheers

G'day Daryl,

If work, water levels and boat prep pan out. I'll be seeing you at Yarrawonga.
